Nikola Lazarov, a Bulgarian architect whose projects we see every day when we go outside without even realizing it. Most of the eye-catching buildings in Sofia that we show to tourists or foreign friends that come to visit us are designed by him. A lot of contemporary architects define him as the best Bulgarian architect of all time. Not only was he praised by Bulgarians, but also by international colleagues. Given that Bulgaria was a young country at the time and most of the architects were from France and Czech republic it is really,, big deal” to get recognized and even become one of the main people to control the architecture of the city if not the main one. Nowadays his name is used as an epitome of great work and remarkable projects, and also a synonym of entrepreneurship and innovative vision.
Nikola is from a working family with a father producer of rose oil and also exporter to other countries which for the time is something really rare and only few people could have market outside of their motherland and he even created his own commercial office in the Romanian city of Braila, which really shows us the roots of the diligent nature of the architect .
Nikola shows his talent at primary school when his perfect drawings are spotted by everyone and later studies in a Plovdiv High School. His professional career starts in the same city as a draftsman for the district engineering in Plovdiv. After several months he moves to the capital city and is part of the Ministry of Public Buildings, Roads and Public Works. His skills are so unique he wins scholarship and goes to study architectures in Paris in Ecole speziale d’Architekture which is prestigious collage for architects and even finishes class with the highest grade score .
After his studies in France he returns to Bulgaria he is forced to work 3 years for the country and even his first task is significant as he has to lead the works on the reconstruction and expansion of the princely summer residence in Evksinograd near Varna. The ruler at the time is Kniaz(Prince) Ferdinand and he is happily surprised by the results and shortly after the reconstruction he is called to Sofia to make the expansion of the east side of the Kniazes(Prince) Palace.
It is impossible to walk into the city center of Sofia without being amazed by Lazarov"s buildings, one of the most famous of which is the Military Club: a very prestigeous place. A special commission decided that Lazarov should take over the important site because he is "young, humble and energetic architect" and he is capable of designing great builds and even he is asked to choose the furniture design of the club and again his work is simply majestic. He is the architect of 60+ sites around the city but as an author of this blog I decided to talk about the military club since it"s personally my favorite build around that area that is designed by him.
I am feeling really delighted to talk about him during this bright month of people that really made a difference and helped for the developing of our great country , because I always had sense of interest of buildings since my father is an engineer and he always teaches me things about architecture whenever we come across intriguing constructions. It is worth to spend time on reading his story because he is a phenomenon and everything happens really fast around him and his break through in architecture is something magnificent since at those times studying abroad and replacing foreigners in a job is close to impossible but Nikola is an example how hard work and talent can bring you to the top and replace the ,,irreplaceable’’. That is the main reason I think his story is worth telling and can inspire young people to be not only interested in that profession but to motivate them to become their best version of themselves.
